July 26. 2015 Press Release

July 23, 2015

Dear SJIAA Members:

I would like to bring up a few ideas that our board members have had about SJIAA’s future so that you can start thinking about these ideas and maybe bring your ideas to the SJIAA board.

Some of our ideas include:

  • Setting up a museum to preserve our history and heritage;
  • Setting up a foundation to help pay for the museum;
  • Setting up a financial assistance fund to help young children whose families need financial assistance in paying for SJI’s services;
  • Setting up a financial assistance fund for SJIAA members who need financial help to attend the Reunion.

We would like you to help us brainstorm for the future.   I know that with your help and assistance, we can be very successful for the future.

Thank you,

SJIAA President

The majority of the feedback that we received from SJIAA members was that we should get our own 501c3. With the expert assistance and help from our attorney, James Frost (L'83), we filed our application for tax-exempt status as a 501c3 organization with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) last month.

I am pleased to announce to everyone that the IRS approved SJIAA as a 501c3 organization last week. We are now in the process of transferring the money that belongs to SJIAA from our fiscal agent's (SJI) account to our own account. However, we will continue to strengthen our relationship with SJI.

SJIAA would like to thank the entire Board of Director, along with our attorney, for all of their hard work on getting SJIAA ready to be a 501c3 organization. Our attorney and board of directors are currently workin on standardizing all the forms and reports that are needed to ensure that SJIAA is able to properly maintain our 501c3 status for a long time. In addition, our attorney will be training the SJIAA Board of Directors in September of 2015 on how to properly manage a 501c3 organization. James will continue working with us until our 2016 reunion.

However, we still need your help by donating money or purchase the Trumpet and shows discs. If you have questions please contact me.

Al Alvord
SJIAA President
