Hello fellow Alumnis,

The notes are for those missed our open discussion on June 13th, we enclosed the power point and video presentations.  Any concerns you may have, it is important to be sure you get accurate answers, please do not hesitate to contact me for clarification.

To avoid any confusions....A simple summary is given below as I wanted to make sure that you understand what is going on:

1. SJIAA will join CIDAA after both officers meet.

2. There will be no ballot.

3. SJIAA will stay with CIDAA until 2016 reunion

4. We will not modify bylaws before 2016 reunion.

5. DURING 2016 reunion - SJIAA members will vote on this important issue - should SJIAA join with CIDAA?

Memo from President
May 22, 2014 at 8:43 AM

Many of you have now heard the news of St Joe’s closure of the traditional day program while other programs remain intact. Faculty and sisters of St Joseph are leaving SJI to other positions and Sr. Laura will retire when the school ends.  Because of this change in organization structure, SJI is no longer hosting SJIAA on its 501c3. It means that SJIAA can no longer depend on SJI’s 501c3. SJIAA has 12 months to get their own 501c3 or join another group before SJI takes further action with bank accounts.

SJI wanted to begin this process early to give SJIAA time to find a new home or fill out a 501c3. If SJIAA becomes it’s own 501c3, we will need to adhere to listed by-laws, account requirements and audit regulations if necessary.  Because of the complicated and lengthy nature of completing this application, our 2016 reunion is in flux and current SJIAA officers are unsure as to the validity of the process.

Instead, another idea for SJIAA has been brought forth – merge with CIDAA (Central Institute for the Deaf Association Alumni) is who have been very supportive to SJIAA. They have their own 501c3 and are willing to permit SJIAA to merge with them. But CIDAA needs to check with its membership as does SJIAA.  Both groups agreed to meet separately with their memberships over the course of the next six month and then having another Board meeting only of SJIAA and CIDAA to discuss findings and next steps.  Once a decision is made, SJI will take steps to help transfer accounts, officers, bylaw changes, etc to the new 501c3.

SJIAA has decided to take advantage of the upcoming commemoration on June 14 by scheduling an open meeting on June 13 for alumni. Please see notifications via email, check their website at www.sjid.org  and paper invites will go out for those who haven’t provided email to SJI.  I encourage you to attend an open meeting on June 13th as well as on June 14th as a farewell party.

Please send your questions concerning about our SJIAA’s future with CIDAA at president@sjiaa.org no later than June 6th. Note to out of town alumni: if you are not able to be present your questions are important also.  Please forward them to me. We will answer your questions on June 13.

Yours in service-
